The bathroom vanity door that needed a firmer close
A friend of a friend asked if I still did small personal visits for bathroom things. I said yes, if it is not a full remodel and nobody expects marble. She said the vanity door under her sink would not close firm anymore, and it was probably nothing. Usually when a woman says probably nothing, she has already opened and shut it forty times while standing there alone getting irritated,, so I brought my screwdriver bag.
The door looked fine until you touched it. Then it sagged and rubbed low, like it wanted attention but did not know how to ask. The bathroom was warm from somebody’s shower and the cabinet face had that damp swelling you get in a wet room. She stood in the doorway holding a towel and said she could have tried tightening it herself, but she did not have the grip. I told her grip matters, but only after you know which screw is actually loose.
I got on one knee and checked the hinge cups. The top screw spun easy, which is NEVER what you want because it feels busy while doing no work. I backed it out, packed the hole with slivers and glue, then let it set while I cleaned the bottom hinge. She asked if I needed more room. I said I can work in a tight spot if people let me take my time,, especially under a sink where everything is close and one bad shove makes a mess.
When the screw bit again, I gave the door slow pressure and watched the gap. It pulled in straight. Not perfect fancy, but FIRM enough that it closed with a quiet little catch instead of flopping open. She said that was satisfying. I said yes, a cabinet should know when to stop. Then she laughed and asked if I wrote that kind of thing down. I wrote VANITY DOOR - WET ROOM, LOOSE TOP SCREW, MADE FIRM.
Before I left, I told her not to hang heavy bottles on the inside because leverage is sneaky. She said she liked having a man explain small things without making her feel dumb. I said nobody is dumb for calling before the whole door comes off. Some jobs are easy, but a personal bathroom visit can still save a person from fighting loose hardware by herself at night.
