The cabinet hinge that squeaked during breakfast
I remember this cabinet hinge because the woman said, right away, “you are going to think this is stupid.” I told her I have seen stupider things than a thing that squeaked during breakfast. That made her laugh and then she relaxed, which is useful. Relaxed people stop grabbing the part while you are trying to study it.
The room had coffee smell and her robe sleeve near my shoulder. She had already cleared a path like I was doing surgery, but it was really just the hinge pin. Still, I respected the effort. If somebody prepares the space for you, you owe them careful work and clean hands.
I checked the angle, applied pressure, and found where it wanted to sit. Not where I wanted. Where IT wanted. Hardware has opinions. She leaned in and asked if I could make it stay. I said I could probably make it stay if nobody forced it before it was ready,, which is regular repair advice.
It took two tries. First one looked right but felt wrong. Second one caught and held. I tested it harder than she expected and it stayed put. She said, “oh,” like the house had answered her back.
