The bathroom fan cover full of lint and one dead fly
A woman I know through a neighbor called about her bathroom fan. She said it used to put out steady air and now it barely moved anything,, and the little room stayed wet too long after a shower. That is not how a bathroom should behave,, so I told her I would make a personal visit on my way home. I figured it was the cover. Those covers look simple but they decide a LOT.
When I got there the bathroom was still warm and the air hung real heavy. The fan was running but you could barely feel it at the vent. She pointed up and said it sounded like it was trying,, but nothing was coming out where you could stand under it. I said a fan can go through the motions and still not be PUTTING OUT where it counts. She laughed a little and said she would not have put it that way,, but that was exactly the problem.
I took the cover off and it was packed solid with lint,, plus one dead fly that had gone in and never come back. That happens. A fan vent is basically an open mouth and little things get lured in and then there is no easy way out. I set the cover down on the counter and thought it would be a quick clean,, but the housing was dusted up too because the cover had been sitting loose.
I vacuumed the lint out, washed the cover, and checked the little screws that hold it. They had worked loose just enough that the cover sat crooked and let air escape sideways instead of down where you want it. I tightened them firm and seated everything flush against the ceiling. She came back and stood under it with her eyes closed for a second. She said she could feel GOOD air now when she stood there,, and that the whole bathroom felt like it hummed right again.
I told her lint is the fan’s way of asking for attention and every couple months it is worth a ten-minute visit with a vacuum. She said she would call me when it started whispering instead of making sound. I said THAT is exactly when to call,, before a little room decides to stay wet and let in conditions that have no business there. We understood each other just fine.
