The pantry door that would not latch unless you lifted it a little
A woman called about a pantry door. She said it would not latch unless you lifted it a little,, and her family had gotten used to giving it that lift every single time. She said you could not leave it half closed because it would just sit there with the catch not engaged and she got tired of the light inside staying on. I said a door you have to lift is a door with an opinion. She said she had been lifting it for a year because her husband said it was fine.
When I got there I could see what she meant right away. The door hung lazy,, like it was letting its lower corner sag a little closer to the jamb than it was supposed to. Standing there you would not notice unless you looked for the sag. But the latch sat low,, so the strike plate missed it by a hair. That is why lifting it worked,, you lifted the whole door up enough that the latch hit where it belonged. I told her it was not the knob. It was the hang.
I got the ladder and went up top. That is where a door carries its tiredness,, in the top hinge. The screw had worked itself loose and the whole top corner was creeping down over the months. I told her this is why so much wear shows up at the BOTTOM of things. The top gives up first and the bottom pays for it. She watched me work. She said she wished her husband thought about the top of things like that.
I pulled the hinge screws and backed out the one that was stripped. I gave the hole a little filler and drove a fresh screw in FIRM. Then I turned the hinge plate until the door hung level again. When I let it go it swung true and the latch dropped right into the strike plate with a clean little bite. No lift needed. She closed it and opened it three or four times like she had not believed a door could do that on its own.
Before I left she said the fix looked too small to be worth what she called it. I said a pantry door is a small thing until you are holding it up one-handed with a full arm of cans,, then it is the whole job. She said she would stop mentioning the lift now that it was gone. I said good,, because a door you have to carry every time eventually makes you carry more than the door.
